About this Trail
Trail Overview
The Anthem-Cave Creek-Spur Cross trail spans about 15 miles through Arizona’s Sonoran Desert, starting from Anthem in the north and ending at Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area in the south. This extensive trail typically takes about 5 to 6 hours to complete, depending on your pace and chosen route.
Exploring Anthem
In Anthem, community trails are surrounded by typical Sonoran Desert scenery—think saguaro cacti and expansive views. As you travel south into Cave Creek, the terrain varies, taking you through rocky areas and desert washes. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, such as desert birds and occasional glimpses of animals like javelinas. Dogs are welcome but must be on a leash.
Arriving at Spur Cross Ranch
The trail comes to an end at Spur Cross Ranch, the newest addition to Maricopa County’s Regional Park System, where the focus is on preserving the natural environment. Here, you can explore historic trails that reveal ancient petroglyphs and the shade of old cottonwood trees.
Trail Navigation and Tips
The trail network is well-marked, making it easy to navigate, but be sure to bring plenty of water, sun protection, and sturdy footwear, especially during warmer months. If recent heavy rain has occurred, the trails may be muddy, and the creeks may be flooded, so plan accordingly. Each section offers different challenges and scenery, catering to various skill levels and interests.
Parking Information
Parking is available at various access points along the trail network. Popular starting points include designated parking areas in Anthem, Cave Creek, and Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area. Please note that some parking areas may have limited capacity during peak times, so plan accordingly.
